Other Fun Facts:
- In the early to mid-1900s, tourists to the outer and lower Cape Cod came primarily for hunting and fishing, not beach-going. Fred Higgins was a well-known and highly regarded hunting and fishing guide despite having only one arm due to an accident in his teens when he shot his elbow off. In 1959, he led a fishing party onto the ice on Shoal Pond. The ice gave way and Fred was drowned; perhaps in part a result of his disability. Despite Shoal’s shallow waters (maximum depth of only 7- 8 feet), it was rumored his body was never found!
- River otter are often spotted in Shoal Pond in late winter.
