The Orleans Water Department provides drinking water for most Orleans residents. It is responsible for the maintenance of the town’s 8 wells and well fields, and for purification of the well water before it enters the drinking water distribution system as potable water. Potable water is regulated by state and federal laws and is tested regularly to check compliance with drinking water quality standards. This 30-minute tour of the facility will allow you to learn how Orleans manages this process.
Each year, the Orleans Water Department issues an Annual Water Quality Report covering the prior year. This report details the results of water quality testing, as well as background on drinking water supply, distribution and treatment. The most recent reports can be found on the Town website.
Orleans’ drinking water has a long record of excellent quality and received an “excellent” quality rating in APCC’s State of the Waters annual report for 2025: https://capecodwaters.org/overview/#results

Directions: Take South Orleans Rd (aka: Rte 28 North – don’t ask) towards Chatham. At about 0.5 miles past Monument Rd, turn right into the Orleans watershed property. Drive about 0.2 – 0.3 mile until you see a one-story tan stone building on your right. Turn right onto the access road to this building. Park along this road by pulling off completely onto the grass shoulder. For those with a handicap parking medallion, please pull up to the building and park in one of the designated parking spots on the right.
