Saturday 1:30-2:30 at Snow Library (16).
Come meet members of the "Sailing Swains" of Harwich - dad Steve, mom Sarah, and kids Lucy, Jessie and Stanley - and learn about their personal encounters with ocean plastics. The Swain family spent six months sailing their 47-ft ketch down the Intercoastal waterway from Cape Cod to Florida and across to the Bahamas in late 2017 early 2018. Among their most memorable experiences was sampling ocean waters for plastics as part of the California nonprofit 5 Gyres using a “manta trawl.” They also surveyed plastic debris on beaches sampling within a one-meter-square quadrant two inches down. The amount of plastic they encountered increased the further south they went. On Long Island, one of the Bahama islands and the southernmost point the family traveled, they discovered a beautiful 55-mile beach whose wrack line was strewn with debris, most of it plastic.
