Centers for Culture and History in Orleans (CHO), 3 River Road, Orleans, MA 02653

NEW EVENT! Join us Saturday morning, September 13, 10:00 – 11:00 am at the Centers for Culture and History in Orleans (CHO) to learn about ongoing efforts to restore seagrasses in Pleasant Bay. Alyssa Novak, Ph.D., assistant professor of coastal ecology at Boston University will discuss her collaborative work on building eelgrass resilience to warming seawater. Seagrasses provide essential habitat for a wide variety of aquatic life and are critical to the health of our magnificent Bay. This is a unique opportunity to learn about initiatives to apply basic research to protect and restore our estuary ecosystems. Dr. Novak has been studying coastal seagrass meadows for over 15 years and has investigated the response of eelgrass growth to a variety of stressors, including warming of coastal waters. She also studies variables influencing carbon capture and storage in seagrass meadows. Please join us to welcome Dr Novak to Orleans!
Note: After this presentation, Dr. Novak will join us on a kayak trip into Pleasant Bay, to observe eelgrass beds near Sampson Island. We will stop on the Island for lunch. The trip is limited in size and requires pre-registration. This paddle can be a challenging and only experienced kayakers over 18 years who have their own boats can sign up.
