📌 OPC is Looking for a Few Good People…

June 20, 2018 By Orleans Pond Coalition

Water Samplers, Mutt Mitt Stockers, and Celebrate our Waters Volunteers Needed.
Do You Love Our Waters? We Need Water Samplers…

Every summer since 2000, citizens of all ages from teens to nineties have volunteered a few hours to collect scientific data on estuary waters of Orleans. This summer more volunteers are needed sample Town Cove, Nauset Estuary, and Little Pleasant Bay on five mornings.

We will teach you the skills for collecting water samples and taking measurements of temperature and dissolved oxygen. Please volunteer and join your fellow citizens who care about the health of our waters. Teams of trained volunteers are formed to collect data using boats, canoes and kayaks to reach designated locations.

Sampling will occur between 6 and 9 am on the following dates: Tuesdays, July 3 and July 17; Wednesdays, August 1 and August 15, and Thursday, August 30th.

Please contact Carolyn Kennedy, Chair of the Marine and Fresh Water Quality Committee at clkenn@verizon.net or 508-255-7564. You can also leave your contact information at the Orleans Town Hall, Planning Department, 508-240-3700, ext 435. Thanks, and see you on the water this summer!

Do You Love Dogs? We need Mutt Mitt Stockers…

67,000 bags of poop were kept out of our groundwater in 2017!

Mutt Mitts started in 2002 with a grant from the Pleasant Bay Alliance and OPC has expanded the program to over 50 locations throughout Orleans. Mitts are supplied by Agway, Stop & Shop, Shaw’s Market, OPC, Snow’s, and Animal Hospital of Orleans.

In addition to beaches, landings and conservation areas, dispensers are located at the Farmer’s Market, community gardens and the bike trail. That’s a lot of pet feces which will not reach our waterways or spoil our walking paths!

Need a Dispenser?

If you have identified an area in need of Mutt Mitts, please contact OPC and let us know where!

Want to Volunteer?

Volunteers are needed to monitor and restock our Mutt Mitt dispensers throughout the year. Contact OPC to volunteer! A list of dispensers needing a helper are here.

Do you love the Nauset Bonfire? We need Celebrate Our Waters Volunteers…

After the summer crowds leave, its time to get ready for Celebrate Our Waters. This year it will be on September 22nd and 23rd.

Celebrate Our Waters is much more than just the Bonfire; there are over 50 different activities including sailing, kayaking, and paddle boarding. This year, we will be hosting a major children’s event at Rock Harbor.

Please consider volunteering a few hours of your time to make this a great weekend.
