In this new year of 2013, the future of our beautiful waterways is at a critical juncture. The Board of Selectmen’s goal is to bring a first phase wastewater management implementation plan before the voters at the May 13, 2013 Town Meeting. Orleans Pond Coalition believes the optimal implementation plan will:
1) Begin now to implement a plan to treat septic nitrogen and phosphorus.
Scientific studies show leaching from our septic systems represents approximately 80% of the controllable nitrogen that is destroying our saltwater bays and ponds. For the health of our environment and our economy, we must begin immediately.
2) Work within our flexible and approved CWMP
Orleans’ Comprehensive Wastewater Management Plan provides us with background information, analysis and steps to achieve our goal of healthy waters. It has been approved by regulatory agencies and vetted by experts. It is an asset we must use.
3) Choose steps now that leave all options open for the future.
Environmental and economic studies show it makes sense to keep the option of wastewater treatment at the Tri-Town site open for consideration.
4) Make it affordable.
Implement our plan in steps that are large enough to be effective and small enough to be affordable.
